Signals of life
“Signals of life” from the “Limits” series stands out for its unusual form—the work is executed on a large, suspended piece of natural cotton fabric, lending it both monumentality and lightness. The minimalist lines scattered across the surface of the textile can be interpreted as traces of life, moments, or impulses that together form a larger picture of human existence.
Using fabric instead of a traditional canvas introduces a sense of intimacy and movement. Owing to its physical properties, the material can symbolize the fragility or fluidity of life.
The freely hanging cloth underscores the natural, organic nature of these “signals,” contrasting with the precision of the black lines. The arrangement of lines on the textile is irregular, evoking both randomness and intention—much like life, where seemingly chaotic events or impulses can coalesce into a coherent whole.
A symbol of continuity and motion, the line becomes the main character of the composition, infusing it with dynamism. The black color of the lines stands out against the light, neutral background of the fabric, clearly highlighting these “signals of life.” Equally important are the spaces between the lines, which may represent silence, pauses, or moments of reflection within life’s flow.
The title suggests that each line is a trace of life, a moment or decision. In the context of the “Limits” series, it may refer to the boundaries of perception—what we notice versus what remains unnoticed, yet still meaningful.
“Signals of life” alludes to the ephemeral and transient nature of human existence. Each line can be seen as an individual moment, trace, or impulse, collectively shaping a broader picture of life. Meanwhile, the fabric—with its texture and manner of presentation—serves as a metaphor for the continuity of life, subject to external influences, transformations, and interactions with its surroundings.
The piece invokes a sense of harmony between chance and intention. The open space on the textile allows the viewer to “breathe” and encourages reflection on one’s own life signals. The minimalist form and unconventional medium emphasize the distinctiveness of this work within the “Limits” series.
