Signals of Freedom
“Signals of freedom” from the cycle “Limits” is a minimalist yet deeply symbolic composition, in which the artist employs a restrained color palette and a simple visual language to address themes of communication, isolation, and the crossing of invisible boundaries. Against a uniform dark background, white vertical marks of varying lengths and shapes are scattered, resembling a code, an encrypted message, rain, or electrical impulses. Although seemingly regular, these lines do not form a perfect rhythm—they differ subtly from one another, creating an impression of organic imperfection, as if they were the result of a human hand attempting to convey something with limited tools.
Nowatkowska does not provide clear answers but instead invites reflection on what it means “to be heard” and whether it is possible to transmit pure intention without distortion. “Signals of freedom” is a painting of silence filled with attempts at contact—beautiful, austere, and unsettlingly true.
