Attraction
The painting “Attraction” by Magdalena Nowatkowska depicts a group of figures merging into a single arrangement, almost like elements of a shared mechanism. The figures are positioned vertically, overlapping one another, with contours that interpenetrate so closely it becomes difficult to tell where one silhouette ends and another begins. They form a structure in which individuality is blurred—instead of separate beings, we see a collective bound together by the force of an invisible field.
The title suggests that this is not accidental, but the effect of a certain energy—attraction. It can be read as a metaphor for human bonds: emotional closeness, social dependencies, and the force that unites. At the same time, the schematic nature of the forms implies that this attraction is not entirely free, but inscribed within a system—perhaps even imposed.
“Attraction” is a painting about the tension between community and the loss of identity. Closeness provides a sense of connection, yet at the same time causes the figures to dissolve into a single, anonymous whole.
